BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS – ARRANGE YOUR CHILD’S ROOM FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS

It goes without saying, as a parent you want what’s best for your child. With school beginning, taking the time now to design a bedroom that nurtures your child will provide powerful effects the whole year through. I’ve been a Feng Shui Consultant for 15 years and have helped many families create rooms for success. The tips listed below are effective – they work.

  1. REDUCE CLUTTER IN THEIR BEDROOM.
  • Why? Clutter creates stagnation and keeps your child stuck. Clutter is distracting and can cause anxiety. It can cause health and sleep problems.
  • Engage your child in the de-cluttering process. This helps them to see and experience the amazing results and teaches them a life-long tool.
  • Stuffing things in the closet or under the bed won’t help.
  • Keep toys to a minimum in the bedroom. Place toys in a “play” area somewhere else in your home.
  • What is clutter?
    • Too many items in one room (overloaded closet, bookcases, and shelves)
    • Items they don’t love/need/use/want
    • Outdated and broken items
    • Dirt/dust/grime
    • Items/clothing strewn around the room, stuffed under the bed and in the closet
  1. ORGANIZE THEIR ROOM.
  • Once you’ve reduced clutter, it’s time for organization. Organization creates peace and helps your child focus.
  • Everything needs a “home”. Find ways to organize clothes, desk, drawers, homework supplies, etc. so it is easy to replace things after use.
  • There are many ideas for organization on Pinterest.
  • See a post I shared on my Facebook page, Linda Stewart Inspired Living,  for some ideas.
  1. SET UP A QUIET SPACE.
  • For older children, this is a must. They need a place to do homework, read, study, and write. Include a desk or table with a lamp and supplies.
  • A designated place helps them focus.
  • Avoid the kitchen, dining room table, and in front of the television for homework.
  1. PAINT YOUR CHILD’S BEDROOM A COLOR THAT IS NURTURING.
  • Soft greens are especially nurturing (think of nature). Other colors that work well are pastel shades of blues, yellows, and tans.
  • Add some red with accessories or wall decor to stimulate luck and success.
  1. ADD A LIVING PLANT TO THEIR BEDROOM.
  • Plants filter the air creating a healthy and clean environment for your child. Plants nurture growth and influence positive energy flow.
  • Caring for a plant teaches your child to care for things.
  • Best Plants (rounded edges are best)
    • Peace Lily
    • Philodendron
    • English Ivy
    • Rubber plant
    • Lady palm
    • Ficus
    • Lucky Bamboo
  1. ADD ADEQUATE LIGHTING
  • Make sure your child has adequate lighting to do homework, read, etc.
  • Task lighting is essential for this. It’s best to use halogen or LED lighting (warm tones are best). Fluorescent lights can be detrimental to health so avoid them. Also, the flickering is disturbing.
  • Let the outdoor light in. Open the blinds, shades, or curtains to activate the “chi” and energize the room.
  1. PLACE WORDS OR IMAGES OF ENCOURAGEMENT ON THE WALLS.
  • You may decide to create a grouping of wall art that inspires and supports them. This will give them a boost every day.
  1. CHANGE THEIR SHEETS ONCE A WEEK.
  • This keeps the room fresh and helps them to sleep better.
  • Dirty sheets create stagnation.
  • Even young children can be a part of this process by removing the dirty sheets.
  1. OPEN THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW.
  • Periodically open their windows to freshen the room and clear the air.
  • This is a quick and easy method of space clearing.
  1. CREATE A RITUAL OF PUTTING THINGS AWAY AT THE END OF THE DAY.
  • This teaches your children a routine that will help them for the rest of their lives.

Wishing your child and YOU a prosperous year of learning, fun, and success.
