A NEW DAY – A NEW WAY

When you wake up in the morning, what is your first thought?

Do you think about all the things you have to do? Do you think about a challenge you’re experiencing at work? Do you think about a problem you’re having with your child? Do you think about someone who upset or hurt you and ruminate about what happened? Do you think about what is wrong with you or your life?

If you’re like me, I’ve had plenty of days in my past when I woke up with these thoughts. At some point, I began to see a connection between my first thoughts and how my day unfolded. Typically, things didn’t go so well. My day seemed to reflect my first thoughts.

Interesting! Would my day be different if I had more positive, loving, and joy-filled thoughts upon awakening?

I began an experiment that has changed my life. When I awoke each morning I consciously chose thoughts that were uplifting. At first, it was challenging because the old way was like a well-worn path.

I began to find ways to support myself. I wrote affirmations and placed them on my nightstand so I went to bed and woke up with happy thoughts. I read inspirational books before I went to bed. I placed photos and art in my bedroom that filled me with joy as I started and ended my day. Over time, I noticed I was happier. Most days were more fulfilling. Even if the day was fraught with challenges or I wasn’t feeling well, I still felt happier.

Now most days I awaken and my first thought is “Thank you for this day.”

I invite you to experiment as I did. When you awake tomorrow, take a deep breath and let your first thought be how glad you are to be alive and given another day to experience life on this precious Earth. Do this each morning. You’ll be amazed at what happens. It’s a gift you can give yourself every day of your life.

This is great advice! I am definitely guilty of waking up and thinking about my “to-do” lists among many other stressful things. I will try this out!

Thanks, Linda…this is such an important tool for enhancing our happiness…ima reminding myself that the thoughts are just words…conjured up by my brain in a sort of habitual way…so taking charge of them is so empowering and loving.

Brilliant! I wake by yelling joyfully, “I’m awake!” It definitely sets the tone for the day.
